Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly discussed their interest in signing a striker.

Despite Enzo Maresca’s repeated vote of confidence in Nicolas Jackson, Chelsea’s co-owner Todd Boehly has revealed they have intentions of signing a striker—a super star one, he suggested.

Chelsea’s striker search 

The Blues had so much offensive potential under Mauricio Pochettino last season but were let down in the final third by poor finishing. 

Nicolas Jackson, who only managed 14 goals in 31 starts, missing 24 big chances, was the main culprit; hence, Chelsea were expected to sign a centre-forward last summer. 

They failed to make the acquisition, however, not for a lack of trying, as they entered negotiations to sign Victor Osimhen but could not complete the deal before deadline day. They also had a bid accepted by Atletico Madrid for Samu Omorodion but inexplicably pulled out in the final stages. 

Chelsea legend John Mikel Obi revealed the club will definitely make a return for Osimhen; however, Maresca’s comments through the current campaign are committed to Jackson as the main striker for many seasons to come, leading to doubts about renegotiating for the Galatasaray man. 

What Todd Boehly said 

Speaking at the Financial Times Business of Football Summit, per Goal. Boehly revealed their intentions to sign a striker; however, he admitted to the complications and unique market problems faced when trying to acquire a player in that position. 

“Strikers are hard to find,” Boehly admitted. “You don’t go into the grocery store and say, ‘I am going to get a striker’. It is an amazing skill set and you have to have the right mentality.”

Boehly went further, explaining Chelsea’s transfer strategy and their focus on youth. He said that they are in the phase of searching for a “superstar captain,” to lead their group of young talented players. A role Osimhen would fit in perfectly. 

“What we were really thinking about is how you put together a team that has the ability to stay together. When you read about the teams that were the dynasties over the years, they had superstar captains that really led them. What you’re trying to find is that superstar captain.”
