Former Manchester United striker and manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has made a return to football, taking charge of Turkish giants Besiktas on a one-and-a-half-year deal.

The former Manchester United manager addressed his ambitions in an emphatic press conference, issuing a clear statement of intent to rivals like Jose Mourinho and Victor Osimhen, who are part of the fiercely competitive Turkish Süper Lig.

Solskjaer outlines vision for Besiktas

Speaking during his unveiling, Solskjaer revealed his mission to rebuild Beşiktaş, who are currently struggling in sixth place in the league and languishing in their Europa League group.

Comparing the project to his stint at Manchester United, Solskjaer expressed his determination to reverse the team’s fortunes, saying, “It’s a similar project to Manchester United. We’ve risen step by step.

“We want to win, but we also want to be realistic. Beşiktaş is a team that deserves victories. I’ve always aimed for this in my playing and coaching career, and that is why I came here.”

With a squad featuring seasoned stars like Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Joao Mário, Solskjaer was keen on building strong bonds within the team and focusing on daily improvement to deliver results.

He also highlighted the emotional pull of joining Besiktas, stating, “I would regret not accepting this before I die.”

Solskjaer begins new rivalry with Mourinho and Osimhen

Solskjaer’s move to Turkey sets the stage for a tantalising clash with Jose Mourinho, his predecessor at Manchester United, who now manages Besiktas’ Istanbul rivals Fenerbahce.

Mourinho has already added drama to the league with his criticisms of officiating and labelling the Süper Lig as “toxic,” and alleging corruption amongst match officials to hand Galatasaray the league title.

Adding to the intrigue, league leaders Galatasaray boast the prolific Victor Osimhen, one of Europe’s most feared strikers, but this has not stopped Solskjaer’s ambition.

The former Norway international declared at his his first press conference as Besiktas boss, “I know what the fans want. We will work for this every day. I am only here to win. We have players who have a habit of winning.

Many view Solskjaer’s words as a direct challenge to his formidable opponents, as Besiktas aim to disrupt the two-horse title race.
