Gout Gout broke an Australian record that stood for 56 years. Interestingly, he almost decided not to run the race.

Following his record-breaking 200m race at the Australian Schools Championships last December, Gout Gout revealed how he didn’t want to run the race 4-5 hours before the feat.

The sprint sensation ran a jaw-dropping 20.04s in the 200m, breaking Peter Norman’s long-standing Australian national record of 20.06s clocked to win silver at the 1968 Olympics.

His impressive performance was after shattering Sebastian Sultana’s U18 national record of 10.27s to a legal 10.17s hours before, cementing his name that he’s well on the path to being the greatest sprinter of his country.

Speaking on Beyond The Records podcast with Olympic champions Noah Lyles and Grant Holloway as the host, Gout Gout revealed how he almost didn’t run the race.

“The day before I didn’t even want to run at all and it got to a point I was thinking of pulling out, but it got to a point I was like people want to see me run, so I was like I’ll run, I’ll run…,” said Gout Gout.

Australian teen sensation Gout Gout made an open challenge to world’s fastest man Noah Lyles, which the American graciously accepted as they look forward to the World Championships in Tokyo.

“What was going through my head is I PB’d, I’m not even thinking about the National Record (NR). And then I lied down and the official time was 20.04s and they say that’s a NR and the previous record by Peter Norman 20.06s I believe which was fast and he came second at the Olympics,” he continued.

“And getting that NR at just the age of 16 at the time was great. It’s crazy to think that literally not even 4 or 5 hours prior to breaking that NR I didn’t even want to run the 200. Just makes me feel even more excited to race against Noah and just race against the best.”

The talented teen star has the goal of running down Noah Lyles and medalling at the World Championships in Tokyo. Considering his progress in the past few months, surely he can challenge the big guns for that top spot.
