Nigeria’s former military president, General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida, IBB, has said he still hopes that the killers of Dele Giwa, the renowned journalist murdered on 19 October 1986, will be uncovered in his lifetime.
IBB made this revelation in his recently launched book, A Journey in Service, where he described Giwa as a “good friend”, noting that his death was a great shock to both him and the nation.
In the book, he vividly reflects on Giwa’s impact, stating: “Giwa was loved by his audience and the rest of the public. Targeting him would shock the public and paint the administration in a feeble light.”
The former president also distanced himself from any involvement in Giwa’s murder, insisting that whoever was behind it must have known of his close relationship with the journalist and other senior media figures.
He wrote: “Whoever was the mastermind knew my relationship with Giwa and a few senior journalists. Hitting at Giwa would get to me emotionally.”
According to him, history will eventually vindicate him when the real killer is identified, whether in his lifetime or beyond.
“The Giwa case, like all mysterious murders, has remained unsolved after so many years. I keep hoping the truth will be uncovered in our lifetime or after us. More often than not, mysterious crimes are solved long after their commission,” he stated.
Earlier, DAILY POST reported that IBB denied any involvement in Giwa’s assassination, which was carried out using a parcel bomb.
The book launch in Abuja was attended by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, former President Goodluck Jonathan, and other prominent former heads of state.
