It would be a big shame – Ex-Super Eagles player expresses concern about Nigeria’s World Cup chances

He's blocking someone - FA Cup winner faults Chelle for Musa, Iheanacho's inclusion

Abbey George, a former Super Eagles defender, has voiced his worries about Nigeria’s ability to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Super Eagles’ campaign has been disappointing, with draws against Lesotho, Zimbabwe, and South Africa, and a 2-1 loss to Benin.

The team have only gained three points in their first four matches, with Rwanda’s Wasps leading the group.

Following their performance in the qualifying series, Nigeria are currently in fifth place in Group C.

Abbey warns Super Eagles

Abbey, a former Super Eagles player, reflected on the team’s current struggles by sharing his emotional experience from Nigeria’s previous World Cup qualification failure.

Speaking to Brila Media, he said, “I cried in my room when we failed in Kano. My kids ask me if I ever played at the World Cup, and I say no.

“It would be a very big shame if these players never play at the World Cup. They’re at the peak of their powers.”

The Super Eagles are under increasing pressure, and Abbey cautions that failing to qualify for the upcoming World Cup would be a major setback for both the team and the nation.

Meanwhile, Eric Chelle, the recently appointed head coach, has announced a 39-man provisional squad for the upcoming double-header matches.

The Super Eagles must win their next two matches to keep their World Cup qualification hopes alive and avoid missing the tournament for two consecutive times.

In an attempt to revitalize their struggling campaign, the team will first travel to Kigali to play Adel Amrouche’s troops in Rwanda and then host Zimbabwe at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.
