Former Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has offered his best wishes to newly appointed Nigeria coach Eric Chelle but expressed uncertainty about Nigeria’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Franco-Malian was appointed by the Nigeria Football Federation earlier this month to lead the three-time African champions.

What Rohr said
Rohr, who managed the Super Eagles from 2016 to 2021 and led them to two AFCON tournaments and the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Rohr, whose Benin team is in the same qualifying group and surprisingly defeated Nigeria 2-1, believes Chelle faces a difficult task.

Ex-Nigerian international Ikpeba wants his former colleague to support Eric Chelle to succeed as Super Eagles coach.
“Of course, I know Eric Sékou Chelle is now with Nigeria, and good luck to him. It’s not going to be easy (for Chelle) to qualify for the World Cup, but of course, everything is still possible,” Rohr told Nation Sports.
Nigeria currently sit fifth in their 2026 World Cup qualifying group and remain winless after four matches. To secure qualification, they will likely need to win all their remaining games and rely on favourable results from other matches.
