Jamie Carragher believes Liverpool manager Arne Slot has already pinpointed several players he “doesn’t rate” and will likely move on in the summer, despite the club’s commanding position at the top of the Premier League.
Liverpool took a massive step toward reclaiming the title with a dominant 2-0 victory over Manchester City at the Etihad. With Arsenal slipping up against West Ham, the Reds now hold an 11-point lead in the title race.
Slot, who took over from Jurgen Klopp last summer, has defied expectations in his first season, despite making just one signing Federico Chiesa for a modest £10 million. The Italian forward has played a minimal role, starting only three matches.
Beyond securing the title, Liverpool’s focus will soon shift to contract negotiations, with key players Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk, and Mohamed Salah all approaching the final six months of their deals.
However, Carragher insists that Slot has already made up his mind about which squad members won’t be part of his long-term vision.
“There are probably four or five players in the squad he doesn’t rate,” Carragher told Sky Sports after Liverpool’s win over City. “I am not being critical, but he’s probably thinking, ‘Now I know what this team needs.’”
Carragher also suggested that Liverpool’s squad, while strong, still requires significant reinforcements in key areas.
“I still think there are three positions in this team that can be improved quite a bit. A left-back, a centre-forward, and an attacking midfielder those are the areas that could take Liverpool to another level.”
Despite Arsenal having a game in hand, injuries have hampered Mikel Arteta’s squad, making it increasingly difficult for them to close the gap.
Slot, meanwhile, has remained grounded, insisting that Liverpool’s success comes from their relentless work ethic rather than any “secret formula.”
“Three days ago, we drew at Villa, and people said we weren’t in a good place. Then we beat City, and suddenly everything changes. We know what it takes to maintain this level it’s about consistency and hard work,” Slot said.
With the title within reach, Liverpool’s future looks bright, but Carragher’s comments suggest that a major squad overhaul could be on the horizon.
