Sir Jim Ratcliffe has revealed that David Moyes is the one manager he would not have appointed in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era at Manchester United.

Ferguson’s departure in 2013 marked the end of an iconic era, but the Red Devils have since struggled to find stability, with ten different managers failing to replicate the legendary Scot’s success. Ratcliffe, who took control of football operations at the club last year, believes the decision to hand Moyes the reins was a major mistake.

“Look, I like David Moyes, and I think he’s a really good manager, but to go from Sir Alex Ferguson to Moyes is not where I would have gone,” Ratcliffe admitted. “Moyes stepped into the shoes of Ferguson, who won the Premier League 13 times and the Champions League twice. He had never managed big players or won major titles, and he didn’t have the personality to lead a club like Manchester United.”

Moyes was handpicked by Ferguson as his successor, but his reign lasted just ten months before he was sacked following a disastrous campaign. Despite rebuilding his reputation with successful spells at Everton and West Ham, Ratcliffe believes the decision to appoint him was a poor one.

The INEOS chief also criticized the club’s failure to secure top-tier leadership in both managerial and executive roles during the post-Ferguson era. “Manchester United is the best club in the world. They should have found the best chief executive and the best coach. Instead, they got both decisions wrong,” he said.

Ratcliffe’s comments come after the recent dismissal of Erik ten Hag, whom he admitted he gave too much time to prove himself. Following a brief spell under Ruud van Nistelrooy, Ratcliffe appointed Portuguese manager Ruben Amorim in November, expressing confidence that he will restore the club’s former glory.

United fans will be hoping Amorim can finally bring stability and success to Old Trafford after more than a decade of managerial turmoil.
