Jose Mourinho has been slapped with a four-match ban and fined £35,000 following his controversial comments after Fenerbahce’s fiery goalless draw against Galatasaray.
The heated Super Lig encounter saw Mourinho criticize the officiating and make remarks about the Galatasaray bench, which sparked outrage. In his post-match press conference, the ex-Chelsea and Manchester United manager described the Galatasaray staff as “jumping like monkeys” after an early challenge and suggested that having a foreign referee improved the game.
Galatasaray swiftly condemned Mourinho’s comments, announcing their intention to take legal action and report the incident to UEFA and FIFA. The Turkish Football Federation (FDT) has since found Mourinho guilty of two offenses: disrespecting match officials and making statements that incited violence and disorder in football.
In their statement, the FDT accused Mourinho of “insulting Turkish football” and making “divisive and inflammatory remarks” that violated the principles of fair play. Despite the backlash, Mourinho has received backing from his club and former players, including Didier Drogba. However, tensions remain high, with Galatasaray’s manager, Okan Buruk, mocking Mourinho as “the crying one.”
The disciplinary fallout extended beyond Mourinho. Buruk received a one-match ban for his post-game comments, while sections of both teams’ fanbases have been punished.
Galatasaray supporters will be restricted from their next home match, while Fenerbahce fans are barred from attending the club’s next two away fixtures. Mourinho’s punishment adds another chapter to his long history of controversy, and all eyes will be on how he responds once he returns to the touchline.
