Liverpool are reportedly pushing to secure the signing of Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Joao Gomes during the summer transfer window.

Following their Champions League exit and with a focus on winning the Premier League title, Liverpool are looking to bolster their squad under new manager Arne Slot. Strengthening the midfield is a priority, and Gomes has emerged as a key target.

According to Gazete do Urubu, Liverpool are close to agreeing on a €60m (£50.62m) deal for the Brazilian international. The 24-year-old, who joined Wolves from Flamengo in January 2023 for €18.7m, has become a standout performer in the Premier League with his impressive work rate and defensive contributions.

Liverpool view Gomes as an ideal addition to their midfield, which currently features Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Ryan Gravenberch as the starting trio. With Curtis Jones and Wataru Endo providing depth, Gomes would offer Slot more options for rotation and improve the squad’s overall balance.

Gomes has made 79 appearances for Wolves, scoring seven goals and providing three assists. His performances have earned him nine caps for Brazil, further boosting his reputation. Despite having over three years left on his contract, Wolves may be tempted to sell, especially with Flamengo set to receive 10% of any future transfer fee.

Manchester United are also reportedly interested in Gomes, but financial constraints could limit their ability to compete with Liverpool’s offer. Meanwhile, Flamengo are closely monitoring the situation due to their sell-on clause.

As Liverpool aim to dominate both domestically and in Europe next season, signing Gomes could be a crucial step in strengthening their squad depth and defensive stability.
