Liverpool have the opportunity to secure Lyon’s talented winger, Rayan Cherki, at a reduced price during the January transfer window. Cherki, 21, is widely regarded as one of France’s top attacking midfielders. This season, he has showcased his potential with six goals and seven assists in 22 matches for Lyon.

Lyon’s financial troubles have taken a toll, with the club being banned from signing new players this January.

Reports from L’Equipe reveal that Lyon must raise €175 million (£147.7m) to avoid relegation to Ligue 2 by the end of the season. As a result, Cherki’s sale before his contract expires in 2026 seems inevitable.

Liverpool have reportedly expressed their interest in the midfielder. According to Sky Germany, Lyon has a verbal agreement with Cherki, allowing him to leave if a €22.5m (£19m) offer is made. Borussia Dortmund is also monitoring the situation, considering a potential move.

Last summer, Paris Saint-Germain explored signing Cherki but instead opted for a €70m (£59.1m) deal with Napoli for Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

Lyon owner John Textor recently revealed Cherki’s desire to join PSG in the past. “Cherki has wanted to leave for several seasons,” Textor shared. “He sent me a message last year saying, ‘I really want to go to PSG.’”

With Lyon’s dire financial state, Cherki’s future appears uncertain, and Liverpool could capitalize on this opportunity to bolster their squad.
