What happened?
The Italian tactician got on the wrong side of Lookman and many football fans when he tagged the Nigerian the “worst penalty taker” he had ever seen.
With La Dea trailing 5-1 on aggregate in the second-half of the second leg of their Champions League playoff clash against Club Brugge, Lookman came on to inject life into the team.
He scored moments after coming on and had the chance to further reduce the deficit from the penalty spot but saw his attempt saved by Simon Mignolet. Atalanta did not get a better chance for the remainder of the game and were dumped out.

Following the match, an angry Gasperini berated the 27-year-old. He accused him of being terrible at penalties and taking the ball off the designated takers, Charles de Ketelaere and Mateo Retegui.
Lookman was not having it, and he put out a statement on social media. He decried the coach singling him out and explained that the designated penalty taker instructed him to take it.
Gasperini speaks again
In an attempt to resolve the issue, Gasperini explained he did not mean to offend the Nigerian. He went in to say that the former Fulham man can improve his penalty technique through training and if he does, he will become the first-choice taker.
“Lookman felt offended, but I didn’t want to offend anyone. He entered with fantastic approach against Club Brugge.
“If he starts training to improve on penalties… with his exceptional skills, Ademola can become our first penalty taker.”
