Members of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, NUJ, Abia State Council has called for transparency in the allotment of plots for the proposed four housing estates in the state.

The state government, had, on Monday, announced plans to build four new housing estates to be located in Umuahia, Aba and Ukwa areas of the state.

Reacting to the proposed housing project, the NUJ while commending the initiative, called for transparency in the allocation of the houses, saying that the allocations should be made affordable to the ordinary citizens.

The NUJ position was contained in a communique issued at the end of February Congress of the NUJ held on Thursday at press centre Umuahia and signed by Chidi Asonye, Chairman and Ikechukwu Onuegbu, Secretary.

The Journalists maintained that previous administrations had built houses which are not in use today, mainly because of their unaffordability to ordinary citizens.

The NUJ members who supported the collaborative war against fake drugs and other unwholesome products between Abia State government and NAFDAC, advised NAFDAC to apprehend and prosecute identified culprits as well as destroy confiscated fake products.

The Abia NUJ members urged the state government to revisit the issue of pensioner’s and payment for their gratuity and urged the government to distribute fertilizers to farmers now that they are useful to the farmers.

Council also commended the NUJ leaders for visiting the Commissioner of Police in Abia, saying the meeting would produce a cordial relationship between the Police and the Journalists.
