Man City agree deal for Nico Gonzalez

The Cityzens have struggled greatly this season, sitting 15 points behind league leaders Liverpool, making it near impossible to defend their Premier League title as it stands. 

They have suffered seven defeats already this season, the latest coming yesterday in the 5-1 mauling to Arsenal. Rodri’s extended absence due to injury has been analysed as one of the factors for their struggles; hence, they were expected to sign a defensive midfielder this window. 

It was a bit surprising that given their splurge in January, they did not address their midfield problems yet. However, following the loss to Arsenal, they immediately completed negotiations with Porto for Gonzalez, a centre midfielder with combative traits.

How it helps Barcelona 

Gonzalez is a Barcelona academy graduate, and he made his debut at the club, breaking into the first team in the 21/22 season. He was sold to Porto in 2023 for a deal worth €8.4 million; however, Barcelona retained a 40% sell-on clause. 

According to Fabrizio, Manchester City will pay the value of the 23-year-old’s release clause €60 million, meaning the Blaugrana are set to receive €24 million from that amount. 

The fee would come as a much-needed boost to Barcelona’s finances that has been unstable in recent years. While they are back within normalcy concerning LALIGA FFP, they were €6 million short of signing Marcus Rashford on loan this winter.
