Chris Rigg is rapidly emerging as one of England’s most exciting young footballers, drawing interest from top clubs, including Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea, and Crystal Palace.

The 17-year-old Sunderland midfielder has gained significant experience despite his young age, making his professional debut at just 15 in January 2023.

After featuring mostly as a substitute last season, Rigg has become a key starter this campaign, with 24 of his 26 Championship appearances coming in the starting lineup.

His contributions include four goals, helping Sunderland stay in the race for Premier League promotion. Their latest victory, a thrilling 3-2 win over Middlesbrough, kept them firmly in contention.

According to The Sun, Manchester United had scouts present at that match, continuing their pursuit of the talented youngster. Interest in Rigg extends beyond England, with Real Madrid reportedly monitoring his progress as well.

Despite being just 17, Rigg has already represented England at the Under-18 level and is under contract with Sunderland until 2027. However, if the Black Cats fail to secure promotion, they could face pressure to cash in on their academy star.

Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris has been full of praise for Rigg, highlighting his remarkable maturity and eagerness to learn. Speaking to Sky Sports, Le Bris remarked, “Some players don’t have that level of maturity even at 30.

He wants to learn, he thrives in front of a big crowd, and he embodies what we are trying to build as a club.” With Rigg’s talent and ambition clear for all to see, this summer could see a fierce battle for his signature among some of Europe’s biggest clubs.
