Manchester United’s turbulent season has seen criticism aimed at several players, with striker Rasmus Hojlund facing particularly harsh scrutiny.
The 20-year-old Danish forward, who arrived from Atalanta for £72 million, has struggled to make an impact, scoring only twice in 18 Premier League matches.
Former United defender John Sivebaek didn’t hold back when assessing Hojlund’s performance, particularly his display in the team’s 3-1 victory over Southampton in January.
Speaking to Ekstra Bladet, Sivebaek remarked, “Apart from one good move setting up Garnacho, he was completely hopeless again. A boy among men.”
While acknowledging the immense pressure on Hojlund to live up to comparisons with Erling Haaland, Sivebaek sympathized with his situation, noting that the young forward is part of a struggling team. “You can’t blame him entirely, but he’s working hard,” he added.
United’s attacking woes are well-documented, with only five Premier League teams scoring fewer goals this season. As a result, reports suggest that Hojlund’s future at Old Trafford is uncertain, with club officials evaluating his progress before making a decision in the summer transfer window.
United legend Rio Ferdinand defended Hojlund, emphasizing that the Danish striker lacks an experienced forward to guide him. “Because he cost around £70m, people expect the finished article, but he’s still learning,” Ferdinand said. “A young striker usually has a mentor, but he has no one.”
The Red Devils are reportedly looking at potential replacements, including Mathys Tel, as they weigh their options ahead of next season. With mounting pressure and speculation about his future, Hojlund’s remaining games this season could determine whether he stays or is moved on.
