Seven medical professionals, including Maradona’s neurosurgeon and psychiatrist, are facing charges of homicide by negligence, with a possible sentence of up to 25 years in prison.

Maradona’s family’s search for justice

More than four years after Maradona’s passing, the trial has finally commenced in Buenos Aires, drawing intense public scrutiny.

According to the prosecution, Maradona’s medical team failed to provide the necessary care, turning his home into what was described as a “theater of horror”.

The court heard that protocols were ignored or mismanaged, with prosecutors labeling the conditions in which the 1986 World Cup hero received treatment as “calamitous”.

Maradona, who was recovering from brain surgery for a blood clot, suffered heart failure at home in November 2020. The defense, however, argues that his death was an “unforeseeable cardiac event” and that medical staff had followed the agreed-upon care plan in consultation with Maradona’s relatives.

One of the key figures in the trial, Dr. Leopoldo Luque, Maradona’s neurosurgeon, insists that home hospitalisation was a joint decision between doctors and Maradona’s family, while the lawyer representing psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov argues that new evidence suggests no criminal responsibility on her part.

Truth about Maradona’s death set to be revealed

The legal battle is expected to last several months, with over 100 witnesses set to testify, including family members, medical professionals, and journalists.

Prosecutors plan to present more than 120,000 messages and voice recordings between Maradona’s medical team, suggesting they were aware of the football legend’s deteriorating condition but failed to act appropriately.

Maradona’s children, including his son Dieguito and daughters Dalma and Gianinna, are among those pushing for a conviction, claiming that their father’s doctors ignored red flags and blocked the family from intervening.

Meanwhile, legal experts suggest that the autopsy’s conclusion, that Maradona died from natural causes, could complicate efforts to hold the medical team criminally liable.

While the prosecution views this as a case of culpable homicide, similar to involuntary manslaughter, the defense maintains that Maradona was a difficult patient who resisted medical advice.
