A total of 15 newly qualified medical doctors from Igbinedion University, Okada, IOU, in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State, were inducted into the medical profession on Thursday.

DAILY POST reports that the doctors were inducted by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, MDCN.

Dr Fatima Kyari, the Registrar of MDCN, who conducted the induction, warned the new doctors against unethical practices and professional negligence.

Kyari, who administered the Hippocratic Oath to the inductees, also advised them to take their housemanship training seriously.

The MDCN Registrar, represented by her deputy, Dr Enejo Abdu, cited a case in 2024 where a doctor was jailed for negligence.

In his address, Prof Lawrence Ezemonye, the university’s Vice-Chancellor, emphasised the importance of professionalism and ethical practice in medicine.

Ezemonye noted that the ceremony marked the second stream of the 19th induction and oath-taking exercise, following the first phase in October 2024, where 51 graduates were inducted, bringing the total number to 66 for the 2024/2025 academic session.

The Vice-Chancellor, represented by his deputy, Prof Raphael Adeghe, urged the inductees to uphold the values of discipline, resilience, and continuous learning as they transitioned from academics to real-world medical practice.

“Medicine is a noble profession, heavily regulated and jealously guarded.

“As you begin your journey, you will face challenges such as long hours, high patient volumes, and emotionally demanding cases.

“However, with resilience, mentorship, and professional development, you will thrive,” he said.

In his induction lecture, Prof Moses Momoh, Medical Director of Citi Surgeons, encouraged the doctors to approach their careers with a humanitarian mindset.

Delivering his lecture titled “Medicine as a Vocation”, Momoh stated that success in the profession would not be measured by the millions of naira earned but by the lives they were able to impact.

He, however, appealed to parents to be more patient with the inductees, stressing that the induction marked the beginning of another journey towards specialisation in the field.
