A 12-foot-tall bronze sculpture, created by renowned sculptor Sergio Furnari was unveiled to celebrate Ronaldo’s 40th birthday.
A gigantic monument was unveiled in Times Square on Wednesday to celebrate the 40th birthday of Cristiano Ronaldo.
The 12-foot-tall bronze sculpture, created by renowned sculptor Sergio Furnari, drew massive crowds and enthusiastic fans who chanted Ronaldo’s iconic catchphrase “Siu!”
What Furnari said
Furnari, known for his impressive terra cotta-and-steel rendition of the iconic New York photograph “Lunchtime atop a Skyscraper,” aimed to “immortalize the essence of Ronaldo not just as a sportsman, but as a cultural icon who has inspired billions around the globe.”
“Cristiano Ronaldo is more than just a football player; he is a symbol of perseverance, excellence, and global unity that inspired me on the creation of this masterpiece,” Furnari said.
He continued, “I wanted to capture the essence of his passion, dedication, and triumphs, and I hope this monument will serve as a testament to his enduring legacy.”
The truck-mounted monument, painted in green, red, and gold, was a magnet for Portuguese-flag waving fans who gathered in Times Square to celebrate Ronaldo’s milestone birthday.
As they gazed up at the towering sculpture, they enthusiastically chanted “Siu!”, Ronaldo’s trademarked celebration chant.
“The ‘Siu’ celebrates the moment when, after scoring a goal, Ronaldo runs towards the corner flag, makes a high leap with his arms spread wide, and then lands with a powerful stance while shouting ‘Siiiiiuuuuu. Fans often chant along, making it a thrilling moment in any match ,” explained the Portuguese American Journal.
As the crowds dispersed and the monument stood tall in the heart of Manhattan, it was clear that Ronaldo’s impact on the world of football and beyond would be remembered for generations to come.
