‘My skin colour has not made things easier’

Nigerian-eligible goalkeeper Noah Atubolu has openly discussed the hostility he has encountered in the Bundesliga as a result of his Nigerian heritage.

The 22-year-old, who was born and reared in Freiburg to Nigerian parents, has competed for Germany at the U17, U19, and U21 levels and even won the Fritz Walter Medal U19 Bronze in 2021.

The goalkeeper joined Freiburg in the 2021 summer transfer window and has found a way to becoming the club’s first-choice shot-stopper.

However, despite his obvious skill and allusions, Atubolu has faced hate speech, even from some Freiburg supporters.

ai.defer = true;

Speaking to Kicker, he said, “I also feel that my skin colour has not made things easier for me with some fans. I’m afraid that will never stop in football, sadly.”

Atubolu made amends for a mistake that almost resulted in a draw during Freiburg’s game against Holstein Kiel by making a fantastic save in injury time, guaranteeing a 3-2 victory.

During the thrilling victory over Holstein Kiel, he established a season sprint record of 32.5 km/h, demonstrating his athleticism and tenacity.

However, he has been a racial target on social media after his error led to him conceding a late goal in Freiburg’s 0-3 defeat to FC St. Paul.

Despite these difficulties, Atubolu has been an outstanding player this season, starting 15 of Freiburg’s 17 Bundesliga games and recording four clean sheets.
