Ugandan authorities are investigating the mysterious death of Nigerian footballer Abubakar Lawal, a player with Vipers Sports Club, who allegedly fell from the third floor of Voicemail Shopping Arcade in Bwebajja on the morning of February 24, 2025. His sudden demise has raised serious questions and suspicions, with conflicting reports about the events leading up to his death.
Initially, reports suggested that Lawal died in a motorcycle accident. However, Vipers SC refuted this claim, stating that police confirmed he fell from Room 416 of Voice Mall. In a statement released on the club’s official X (formerly Twitter) account, Vipers acknowledged the growing concerns surrounding his death, hinting at possible foul play.

“The police report confirms that on Monday morning, Lawal Abubakar fell from the third floor (Room 416) of Voice Mall, Bwebajja, and not from a motorcycle accident as earlier reported. He was rushed to Entebbe Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival,” the club said.

This contradiction has deepened suspicions about the real circumstances behind the player’s death.

According to preliminary police investigations, Lawal arrived at the shopping mall in his vehicle (registration number UBQ 695G) to meet his friend, Omary Naima, a Tanzanian national who had been staying in Room 416 since February 20, 2025.

Naima told police that she left Lawal in the room preparing tea before heading to a game center inside the mall. Shortly afterward, at around 8:00 AM, Lawal reportedly fell from the balcony.

He was rushed to Entebbe Referral Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Law enforcement officials are now retrieving CCTV footage from the shopping mall and conducting thorough interrogations to piece together the moments leading to Lawal’s death.

Police have also recovered Lawal’s belongings, including two smartphones, a pair of open shoes, headsets, a training kit, and chargers, from his black backpack.

In the wake of this tragedy, Lawal’s family has requested for his body to be repatriated to Sokoto, Lagos, Nigeria. Vipers SC, under the leadership of Club President, Dr. Lawrence Mulindwa, has committed to covering all expenses relating to the process.

“For now, we are processing the needed documents to ensure Lawal’s body is returned home for a proper burial,” the club stated.

Meanwhile, the club will hold Dua prayers for Abubakar Lawal at St. Mary’s Stadium, Kitende, on Thursday at 4 PM. The prayer session will be open to the public, allowing fans, teammates, and well-wishers to pay their respects.

The football community, especially in Nigeria and Uganda, is in mourning following Lawal’s tragic death. Fans, teammates, and football authorities are demanding a transparent investigation to uncover the truth.

While no official cause of death has been confirmed, the conflicting reports and Vipers SC’s admission of potential foul play have only intensified speculation. Authorities now face pressure to provide clear answers and ensure justice if any wrongdoing is uncovered.

As the investigation progresses, more details are expected to emerge. For now, Lawal’s death remains shrouded in mystery, leaving behind more questions than answers.
