The Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, in the 19 Northern states and the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja, has observed with dismay the newly formed group called the Christian Elders of the North, alleging that it has been set up to undermine its leadership.
The Secretary, Northern CAN, Elder Sunday Oibe, in a statement on Wednesday said, “Our attention has been drown to a newly-formed group called the Christians Elders of the North, which unfortunately seemed to have been set up to undermine the leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 Northern states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.”
He stated that while the Northern CAN respect everyone’s right to freedom of association and the formation of groups, they strongly opposed any organization created with the intent of destabilizing or undermining others.
According to him, “It has come to our attention that this so-called group recently convened in Abuja and conducted an election to appoint a new leadership for Northern CAN.”
It said that they found it deeply troubling that one group would attempt to conduct elections for another, saying that such actions were not only improper but unlawful.
Oibe called on members of the public to disregard the purported election of leadership for Northern CAN as carried out by the Christians Elders of the North.
He explained that their action was not only “unlawful and mischievous” but calculated to ridicule the Christian body for selfish interest.
The Northern CAN said, “Anybody parading himself as the elected Chairman of Northern CAN is an impostor and a desperado.”
