Manchester United’s 3-2 victory over Ipswich may have ended in celebration, but their shocking defensive lapse in the opening minutes left many unimpressed. TNT Sports pundits Robbie Savage and Rio Ferdinand were quick to criticize goalkeeper Andre Onana and full-back Patrick Dorgu for their costly miscommunication, which led to Ipswich’s early goal.

The mistake came just four minutes in when Ipswich captain Sam Morsy played a long ball behind United’s defense. Dorgu, making only his third appearance for the club, looked to have the situation under control until Onana unexpectedly rushed off his line.

The young defender attempted to pass the ball back, but instead played Jaden Philogene through, allowing him to slot the ball home with ease. During TNT Sports’ coverage, former Premier League midfielder Robbie Savage was baffled by Onana’s decision-making.

“Wow. Dorgu has tracked the run, and the communication between him and Onana must be non-existent,” he said. “I’ve got no idea why Onana is running out to that position. Dorgu has got it under control no problem at all. Stay in your six-yard box!”

Savage doubled down on his criticism, arguing that Onana’s poor judgment put Dorgu in a difficult position. “There was no reason for Onana to come out. The defender was in control. Just talk, lay it back to him, and clear it.”United legend Rio Ferdinand also weighed in, agreeing that both players were at fault.

“A terrible start. I don’t think Dorgu, at any moment, looks up to see where Onana is. Onana doesn’t need to come out the full-back is in complete control,” Ferdinand stated. “It was a lack of communication, and Ipswich punished it.”

The young defender’s nightmare first half didn’t end there. After United fought back to take a 2-1 lead, Dorgu was sent off in the 43rd minute for a reckless challenge on Omari Hutchinson, reducing his team to ten men. Ipswich immediately took advantage, with Philogene scoring his second of the night to level the game at 2-2 before halftime.

Despite the early mistakes and Dorgu’s dismissal, United showed resilience. Harry Maguire’s towering header early in the second half secured a much-needed victory, easing the pressure on manager Ruben Amorim. However, the defensive errors remain a concern, with Onana’s decision-making and Dorgu’s composure coming under intense scrutiny.

As United prepare for upcoming matches, Amorim will need to address these lapses to prevent further costly mistakes in their push for a strong finish to the season.
