Putin appoints Darchiev as Russia's new Ambassador to United States

Russia President Vladimir Putin has appointed diplomat Alexander Darchiev as the country’s ambassador to the United States of America.

This was disclosed in a statement on the Kremlin’s official website on Thursday.

“Appoint Alexander Nikitovich Darchiev as the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Russian Federation to the United States of America and the Permanent Observer of the Russian Federation to the Organization of American States in Washington,” the statement read.

Darchiev has been in diplomatic service since 1992.

He previously worked at the Russian diplomatic mission in Washington in various positions.

Darchiev also served as Russia’s ambassador to Canada from 2014 to 2021, after which he became the director of the North Atlantic Department.
