Ruben Amorim admitted he struggled to connect with Marcus Rashford, stating that the forward failed to grasp his footballing philosophy both in training and on the pitch. Their relationship soured soon after Amorim took charge at Manchester United, leading to Rashford’s exclusion from the first team.
The 27-year-old forward had not played for United since December 12. Speculation swirled over his future throughout the winter transfer window before he secured a loan move to Aston Villa until the season’s end.
Now under Unai Emery, Rashford is eager to revive his career and could make his debut this weekend in the FA Cup against Tottenham.
Amorim, addressing Rashford’s departure, wished the England international well but acknowledged their differences.
“I couldn’t get Marcus to see football and training the way I do,” Amorim admitted. “Some players thrive under certain coaches, and others don’t. I just hope he and Unai Emery can connect because he’s a very talented player. Thankfully, he’s in Birmingham now, so you can ask another coach about him. My focus is on our squad.”
He further emphasized that while some players adapted to his style, others did not. “It’s normal in football. It has happened with many coaches. The key point is, it was my decision,” he stated.
Rashford, meanwhile, expressed enthusiasm about working with Emery, believing the move to Villa Park aligns better with his playing style.
“It’s an ambitious time for this club, and this is a great opportunity for me,” Rashford said upon his arrival at Villa. “I’m excited to get started, train, and play my first game.”
Praising his new manager, Rashford continued: “Unai Emery is a top manager. What he’s done at Villa is incredible. The club’s ambition is clear, and that’s what makes it so appealing. They keep improving every year, and I want to be part of that journey.”
With Villa competing at a high level in the Premier League and still in the Champions League, Rashford sees the short-term switch as a chance to rediscover his form.
“I needed to go somewhere that suits my style of play. My goal is to help the team while also improving myself. It’s a short-term move, so I have to make the most of it.”
