The human resources agency of the United States has informed at least two dozen employees that they have just nine days to decide whether to relocate to Washington or lose their jobs.
The Office of Personnel Management, OPM, was said to have sent an email on Wednesday to remote workers, some of whom live thousands of miles from Washington, telling them they are being relocated to the US capital and have until March 7 to decide whether to accept the move.

The memo told the OPM employees that if they refuse to move to Washington their options for continued employment with the agency may be limited, stating that the agency may pursue an adverse action against them.

While President Donald Trump and his cost-cutting czar Elon Musk, who spearheads the Department of Government Efficiency, DOGE, have made clear that they want to relocate Washington-based federal workers to other parts of the country, this appears to be the first time they are demanding remote employees move to the capital.

Meanwhile, some of the workers who received the email have said that they were already considering leaving OPM.

The National Federation of Federal Employees, a union which represents 110,000 government workers, said this was the first time it was aware that the Trump administration had told people to relocate to Washington.

“It’s another attack on the civil service and to force people to quit,” the executive director of the union, Steve Lenkart said.
