One pundit has explained why Maresca could be sacked at Chelsea imminently.

Paul Merson believes that Enzo Maresca needs to oversee victories against Southampton and Leicester City to save his Chelsea job.

Maresca is reportedly facing a make-or-break situation at Stamford Bridge, with his job on the line if the Blues fail to win their next two Premier League matches.

Chelsea form

Chelsea have been in poor form recently, winning just two of their last ten league games. The Blues fell to a seventh Premier League defeat against Aston Villa, failing to capitalise on Enzo Fernandez’s early goal to concede twice after halftime, with Marco Asensio scoring for the visitors. 

The loss was the Blues’ third in four league games and third reverse on the trot away from home, seeing the West London outfit slide to seventh in the standings.

Sky Sports pundit Merson has suggested that the Italian manager could be sacked if Chelsea fail to win their next two top-flight games against Southampton and Leicester. 

“If they don’t win their next two games, the manager won’t be there,” said Merson in his Sky Sports column. “They’re playing against two of the worst teams to play in the Premier League for I don’t know how long in Southampton and Leicester. 

“So, if they don’t win those two games, he will do well to keep his job. Chelsea have got to get in the Champions League. They need the Champions League to keep players like Cole Palmer as he will want to play in that competition. 

“They will have to finish in the top five, otherwise I dread to think what’s going to happen. I just don’t see what the plan is. 

“All the seven-year contracts and these players are not getting any better. How many of them have been a major success?”

Chelsea host bottom-placed Southampton on Tuesday, keen to secure maximum points to potentially end the gameweek inside the coveted European places.
