Moderate Republican senator for Maine, Susan Collins, has announced that she will not support President Donald Trump’s nominee for FBI Director, Kash Patel.
Patel faces a final confirmation vote on Thursday afternoon.
Fox News reports that Patel cleared his last procedural hurdle on Thursday morning, despite losing Collins’ support.
“While I strongly support efforts to ensure that all federal employees perform their responsibilities ethically and in accordance with the law, Mr Patel’s recent political profile undermines his ability to serve in the apolitical role of Director of the FBI,” Collins said.
DAILY POST has learnt that key Republican senators, Bill Cassidy and Thom Tillis, are backing Patel for the role.
Tillis was among the first to support Patel, playing a key role in guiding his nomination through the Senate.
According to reports, Patel can afford to lose only three Republican votes, assuming all Democrats oppose him and that all senators are present for the vote.
Collins, who is up for re-election in Maine in 2026, was an exception in her last bid, winning the state alongside former President Joe Biden due to split-ticket voting.
