President Volodymyr Zelensky has left the White House after a tense meeting with President Donald Trump regarding the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.

The Ukrainian leader travelled to the United States to sign the minerals deal with President Trump, but it has now been confirmed that the formal agreement will not go ahead for the time being.

Zelensky, Trump, and Vice President JD Vance were involved in what could be described as a shouting match during the meeting on Friday.

Zelensky insisted that Russia’s President Vladimir Putin cannot be trusted, as he reneged on his earlier assurance that he would not invade Ukraine following the 2014 attack.

He recalled that French President Emmanuel Macron and former German Chancellor Angela Merkel were present when Putin made that promise.

Trump, however, said it was clear that Zelensky harboured hatred for Vladimir Putin, which he understood, but warned that such an attitude would make negotiations difficult.

“It’s going to be a hard deal to make, but the attitude has to change,” Trump said, adding that Zelensky does not “hold the cards” in the negotiation.

When asked whether he aligned with either party, Trump emphasised that he was only aligned with the United States, Europe, and the world.

Vance criticised Zelensky for failing to say “thank you” during the meeting, arguing that US intervention was “diplomacy that’s going to end the destruction of your country.”

“I think it’s disrespectful for you to come into the Oval Office and try to litigate this in front of the American media,” Vance fumed.

Zelensky acknowledged that “everyone has problems” during wars, adding that although America is safe and has a nice ocean, “you will feel it in the future.”

Trump responded sharply: “Don’t tell us what we’re gonna feel, we’re trying to solve a problem. Don’t tell us what we’re gonna feel.”
