Arsenal defender William Saliba has revealed that he considers Sergio Ramos the “best defender in history,” placing the Spanish legend ahead of other greats like Virgil van Dijk.
At just 23, Saliba is already being touted as one of the world’s best defenders, but he acknowledges that winning major trophies is crucial to cementing his legacy. For Saliba, Ramos’ incredible success with Real Madrid and Spain is what sets him apart.
Ramos won five La Liga titles and four Champions League trophies during his 16-year spell at Real Madrid, as well as two European Championships and the 2010 World Cup with Spain. After leaving Madrid, he added two Ligue 1 titles with Paris Saint-Germain.
Saliba admitted he was eager to get Ramos’ shirt when Arsenal faced Sevilla in the 2023-24 Champions League group stage. However, Arsenal teammate Gabriel Magalhães, another admirer of the Spanish icon, claimed the prized jersey.
“We played against him last season, and of course, I wanted his shirt,” Saliba said. “But Gabriel wanted it so bad, so he gave it to him. For me, he is the best in history. There are others like Van Dijk, who is unbelievable, and Gabriel as well.”
The French international also reflected on how the perception of defenders has changed over the years. “When I was younger, everyone wanted to be a striker or winger, not a centre-back. But players like Ramos have shown that defenders can be world-class and influential too.”
Despite his rapid rise, Saliba remains humble and focused on improving his game. “I need to score more goals and help my team win trophies. When you win, you can say you’re the best. We haven’t won yet, but we’re still in the Champions League, so we need to push ourselves.”
Saliba will have the perfect opportunity to prove himself on the biggest stage when Arsenal face Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter-finals. Meanwhile, the Gunners prepare for a crucial Premier League clash against Chelsea this weekend, while Real Madrid travels to Villarreal in pursuit of La Liga leaders Barcelona.
