The Blues manager has leapt to the defence of his goalkeeper following another high-profile mistake, insisting that the Spaniard remains a vital asset for the Blues.
Robert Sanchez was at fault during Chelsea’s 3-1 victory over Wolves at Stamford Bridge, spilling a corner delivery that allowed Matt Doherty to score the visitors’ equaliser just before half-time.
The error marked the fourth occasion this season that Sanchez’s mistakes have directly led to opposition goals, sparking concerns over the reliability of Chelsea’s No. 1.
However, Maresca has brushed off the criticism, focusing instead on Sanchez’s positive contributions throughout the campaign.

‘Sanchez is doing well’ – Maresca

Speaking to Sky Sports, the Italian tactician said, “Fourth mistake leading to a goal? And how many times has he saved us? I think more than four. No problem. Mistakes happen to him, to the strikers, and to central defenders; no problem. Robert Sanchez is doing well. [Media attention] is part of our job when you make some mistakes. Robert has saved us many times; it happens, no problem.”
Maresca also dismissed concerns about Chelsea’s defensive structure, pointing to the team’s impressive record this season. He added:
“If I’m not wrong, only four or five teams in the league have conceded less than us. So why [ask about] a defensive problem? I think the balance is quite good between offensive and defensive. Then you can concede a goal in any way. The first 40 minutes we were on top. The performance was excellent, and we dominated the game. We scored and created many more chances.”
Chelsea’s win over Wolves took them back into the Premier League’s top four, sitting two points clear of reigning champions Manchester City and a resurgent Newcastle United.
However, that spot could be in jeopardy, given that the Blues’ next game is against City at Etihad Stadium on Saturday.
