Super Eagles legend Jay-Jay Okocha has expressed his displeasure with Nigeria’s football management as it stands right now.

Last week, the NFF appointed a new head coach, Erik Chelle, after many months of searching for Finidi George’s replacement.

The former Mali coach took over from interim head coach Augustine Eguavoen, who led the Super Eagles after the resignation of Finidi.

However, despite his appointment, the NFF’s decision has been met with a lot of backlash from Nigerians.

Okocha speak about the Super Eagles 

Okocha has claimed that unless the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) makes major changes, the Super Eagles’ trophy drought might continue.

.According to the Guardian, Okocha said, “The Super Eagles may not win any trophy until the current NFF officials are dissolved or reformed. 

“Appoint new officials who know more about football, who have an interest in football, who love football, whose lifestyles represent football.

“You can’t appoint politicians to manage football. They will turn it to politics, and that’s what is happening today. 

“We have the best players in the world, yet we have no trophy to lay our hands on, not because of the players, absolutely not.”

Okocha also voiced his disappointment with the Super Eagles’ frequent coaching staff changes, saying that they impede the team’s development.

“When you change a coach, you have changed a dream, a vision, and a mission. In short, you have changed a generation.”

The last time Nigeria’s Super Eagles raised a trophy was in 2013, when they won the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) championship in South Africa by defeating Burkina Faso 1-0 in the championship match.

The last time they came close to winning was at the 2023 AFCON tournament, where they lost to Côte d’Ivoire in the final and took home a silver medal.
