Joe Cole has identified systemic issues with Chelsea’s goalkeeping recruitment
Former Chelsea winger Joe Cole has expressed concerns over Chelsea’s goalkeeping situation, suggesting that there is “something systemically wrong” with the club’s recruitment model.

Cole’s comments come after a series of errors from Chelsea’s goalkeepers, including Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen.
What Cole said
Speaking on The Dressing Room Podcast, Cole argued that Chelsea’s inability to identify a reliable number one goalkeeper is a sign of a deeper issue.

“It’s something systemically wrong because you can’t have nine goalkeepers on your books and not know which one is your number one,” Cole said.
Cole pointed out that Chelsea has a large number of goalkeepers on their books, including Kepa Arrizabalaga and Djordje Petrovic, who are currently out on loan.

Didier Drogba has come to the defence of his former coach at Chelsea, Jose Mourinho, after he was accused of being a racist by Galatasaray.
He emphasised that the club needs to improve its recruitment process to identify the right goalkeeper.
Cole suggested that Chelsea should consider signing Nottingham Forest’s Matz Sels, who he believes is one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League this season.

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca spoke on Cole Palmer’s form after the England international reached seven games without a goal.
“Do you know who I think is one of the best goalkeepers in the league at the moment? Sels from Forest,” Cole said.
He continued, “Mate, I’m telling you. Watch him play. Assured, makes saves. I don’t know whether he’s having a golden period in his time, but they are out there. You’ve just got to pick the right one.”

Cole’s comments were echoed by former West Ham striker Carlton Cole, who noted that Chelsea has not had a “settled goalkeeper” since Thibaut Courtois left for Real Madrid in 2018.
Chelsea’s goalkeeping woes continue to be a concern for the club, and Cole’s comments highlight the need for a more effective recruitment strategy.
