Former Liverpool defender Steve Nicol has explained why Ruben Amorim continues to play the same way despite Manchester United’s poor form, with Sunday’s Premier League defeat by Tottenham Hotspur the club’s 12th in 25 league matches this term.

Tottenham secured their first Premier League double over the Red Devils with a 1-0 victory at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

James Maddison scored the decisive goal in the 13th minute, capitalising on a rebound after Lucas Bergvall’s shot was saved.

Despite a strong start from Amorim’s men, with Guglielmo Vicario denying both Rasmus Hojlund and Alejandro Garnacho, it was Spurs who took the lead. The Argentine then missed a golden opportunity to equalise shortly after.

United continued to threaten in the second half, with Garnacho forcing Vicario into two further saves. However, Spurs defended resolutely and held on for a valuable victory, their first at home since early November.

The win lifts Tottenham to 12th in the table, leapfrogging Manchester United, who drop to 15th. The result was another setback for Amorim, whose side have struggled for consistency since his appointment in November.

In spite of the latest loss, Nicol provided context for Amorim’s approach.

“Initially, after four, five games, I’m thinking he had to change something,” said Nicol on ESPN. “But then I realised that ‘I’m going to try with what I’ve got to play this way and let’s stick to it because if I keep changing it and try to do different things, these players are not capable of raising their level regardless of how I play’.”

What next for Manchester United?

Amorim’s side face Everton on February 22, seeking to leapfrog the in-form Toffees.
