Tottenham Hotspur have secured the signing of 17-year-old Mason Melia from St Patrick’s Athletic in a record-breaking deal for a League of Ireland club. The talented forward, who turns 18 in September 2025, will officially move to North London in January 2026 due to Brexit regulations.
The reported transfer fee stands at an initial £1.6 million, with add-ons potentially increasing the total. This makes it the most expensive sale in League of Ireland history.
Despite his young age, Melia has already made 54 appearances for St Pat’s, scoring 10 goals, and has featured in the Republic of Ireland Under-21 setup.
Melia had previously attracted interest from top Premier League clubs, including Arsenal, Brighton, and Manchester City, where he even had a trial. However, Spurs have won the race for his signature, handing him a contract that runs until 2031.
Announcing the move, Tottenham stated: “We’re delighted to confirm an agreement with St Patrick’s Athletic for the transfer of Mason Melia. The forward has signed a deal running until 2031 and will officially join us in January 2026.”
St Pat’s manager Stephen Kenny praised Melia’s work ethic, tactical intelligence, and ability to press high up the pitch.
He highlighted the youngster’s rapid development, particularly in hold-up play, and emphasized his goal-scoring instincts.
Kenny added: “Mason is a fantastic talent with a great attitude. His performances in Europe against high-caliber opposition have been outstanding. He has the versatility to play across the front three and has scored a variety of goals, showing his natural ability in front of goal.”
With a long-term contract in place, Spurs will hope Melia can develop into a key player in the coming years.
