Canadian tariffs on United States’ products came into effect on Thursday, in response to the 25 percent tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump on steel and aluminium imports.
From midnight (0400 GMT), Canada applied tariffs on about 29 billion dollars (20 billion US dollars) products imported from the US, including steel and aluminium, computers and sports equipment.
Canadian Prime Minister designate Mark Carney said the unjustified US tariffs hurt Canadian workers.
“We’re rightly retaliating and every dollar from our tariffs will support our workers,’’ he wrote on X.
Carney was earlier on Sunday elected as the new leader of the Liberal Party, replacing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and is expected to assume the role of prime minister temporarily.
He is due to be sworn in on Friday.
Trump argued that excessive steel and aluminum imports threaten US national security.
