United States President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that he plans to impose 25 per cent tariffs on imports from the European Union, EU, into the U.S.

Speaking during his first cabinet meeting at the White House, Trump was asked by reporters whether he still intended to apply 25 per cent tariffs on Mexico and Canada, despite a drop in migrant crossings.

“I’m not stopping the tariffs, no,” Trump responded. “On April 2, the tariffs go into effect—not all of them, but a lot of them. And I think you’re going to see something amazing.”

Trump also confirmed during the meeting, which was attended by billionaire advisor Elon Musk, that he had made a “decision” regarding tariffs on the EU.

“We have made a decision, and we will be announcing it very soon,” he said. “It will be 25 per cent, generally speaking, and that will apply to cars and other goods.”

He added: “The EU is a different kind of case than Canada. They have taken advantage of us in a different way.”
