UCL: Yamal beats Messi and Ronaldo to Champions League record with Benfica heroics

The Barcelona sensation scored and assisted as the Blaugrana advanced to the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Barcelona avoided early Champions League elimination with a 3-1 success against Benfica on the night and 4-1 on aggregate, having claimed the first leg 1-0.

Hansi Flick’s men went into Tuesday’s match after a marginal victory over the Portuguese top-flight club last week despite having Pau Cubarsi dismissed after 22 minutes.

Raphinha would put the LaLiga giants ahead just after the hour, and the Brazilian was pivotal in Tuesday’s reverse fixture.

The 17-year-old set up Raphinha for the opening goal after 11 minutes, only for Nicolas Otamendi to peg back Flick’s men two minutes later.

However, Raphinha turned provider for Yamal’s strike before the half-hour mark before adding a third three minutes before the interlude to all but secure Barcelona’s place in the quarters.

With his goal and assist in the second leg, Yamal became the youngest player (17 years, 241 days) to hit the target and turn provider in the competition’s history, a feat neither Lionel Messi nor Cristiano Ronaldo achieved in their youth.
