UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Thursday declined to provide a definite response to a question about President Donald’s Trump’s comments regarding the annexation of Canada.

Since his reelection last November, Trump has on multiple occasions expressed his wish to see Canada become a part of the United States of America.

Alaska and Hawaii were the last two states to join the union in 1959, and Trump posits that Canada would gain immensely by becoming the 51st state.

Trump often says Canada joining the U.S. will translate to benefits such as full military protection, and less taxes for its people, among others.

At a press conference during his visit to the White House, Starmer was asked his view of Trump’s desire, and if King Charles III has expressed any concern to remove one of the grounds under his control.

In reaction, the UK leader said he and Trump had a “really good discussion, a productive discussion”, and respective teams will be working together on an economic deal and on security in Ukraine.

“You mentioned Canada, I think you’re trying to find a divide between us that doesn’t exist,” Starmer asserted. “We’re the closest of nations and we had very good discussions today but we didn’t discuss Canada.”

What seemed like a subsequent attempt by the journalist to speak more was quickly rebuffed by Trump. “That’s enough, thank you,” the President said.
