President Donald Trump’s envoy’s scheduled news conference with Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy was cancelled on Thursday amid an exchange of words between both leaders.

After a meeting in Kyiv, U.S. special representative Keith Kellogg and his host only posed for photographs and did not address journalists in attendance nor deliver statements as expected.

Ukrainian presidential spokesman Serhii Nikiforov informed the press that the change was requested by the United States. The delegation, however, did not provide an explanation.

Zelenskyy had announced that the talk with Kellogg was a “good conversation…we can and must make peace reliable and lasting so that Russia can never return with war again.”

The turn of events after Zelenskyy’s session with the retired U.S. general followed Trump’s tirade against the Ukranian leader whom he labeled a “dictator” with low approval rating.

Trump said many places in Ukraine are being “blown to smithereens”, and that the country “looks like a massive demolition site” because Zelenskyy went into a war he should not have started.

“You (Zelenskyy) have been there for three years, you should have ended it. You should have never started it; you could have made a deal,” he stated on Tuesday.

Trump also called for elections in Ukraine, saying he believes the people want a new government: “That (elections) is not a Russian thing; that’s something coming from me and coming from many other countries also.”

In response, Zelensky told reporters that though he had respect for Trump, the president was “unfortunately living in disinformation space.”

White House national security adviser Mike Waltz cautioned Ukraine at a briefing, saying: “There’s some of the rhetoric coming out of Kyiv, frankly, and insults to President Trump (that) were unacceptable.”

The tenure of Zelenskyy’s presidential term elapsed in May 2024 but no major plans for elections yet as Ukraine has been under martial law since Russia’s invasion in February 2022.
