Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti was disappointed in his side’s defeat to Real Betis, acknowledging how inferior they were to the Heliopolitans on the day.

Isco leads Betis past Real Madrid to hand advantage to Barcelona and Atletico

Antony and Isco-led Betis set Real Madrid’s title bus off course with comeback victory at the Villamarin.

What happened

Having taken a first-leg advantage with a 2-0 win at Santiago Bernabeu, Real Madrid were favourites to win this clash, despite their topsy-turvy form.

When they scored inside the first ten minutes through Brahim Diaz, Los Blancos threatened to blow their hosts away, as they seemed set for a comfortable victory which would see them return top of the league.

However, Betis rose themselves, equalising through a bullet Johnny Cardoso header before former Merengues star Isco scored the winner from the spot.

What Ancelotti said

Following the defeat, Carlo did not mince words, telling reporters his side deserved to lose, given how poorly they played.

“We deserved to lose; we didn’t play at our level,” Carlo said. “If we play like this against Atlético Madrid, we will not win.”

Los Merengues play their crosstown rivals Atletico Madrid in midweek’s Champions League round of 16 clash, and Ancelotti worries that they will lose.
