The boys are eligible to play for their parents’ country, Argentina, and Spain, being their place of birth. However, they could also secure American citizenship, should Messi stay longer in the country.

What Pochettino said

The former Tottenham man was named the USMNT boss last year. His team are currently training in Miami, where Messi is based; hence, he was questioned about the possibility of the Messi boys playing for the US.

Pochettino left the door open, stating that anything could happen. However, he added that the boys would show similar patriotic sentiments as their father and play for Argentina.

“Well, we could talk. The thing is, maybe I’ll be too old by the time the kids are ready for the senior national team. I likely won’t be there, but sure, it would be interesting—why not,” Pochettino said.

He added: “Considering they’re Leo’s children, with Argentine blood running through their veins, I think it would be difficult to convince them to play for the United States.”

The RFEF made an effort to naturalise Messi and ensure he represented La Roja, however, the Barcelona ace insisted on playing for the Albiceleste.

Also, the 37-year-old’s first son, Thiago, has previously been asked about playing for Spain, but he stated explicitly he only dreams of wearing Argentine sky blue.

“I want to play with the Argentine team and I don’t think there is any way the Spanish team can convince me.”
