Why we traded Luka Doncic to Lakers — Mavs GM Nico Harrison opens up

Luka Doncic was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers in a blockbuster trade that has raised eyebrows and questions all around the league.

The NBA world was stunned on Saturday night, as the Dallas Mavericks traded away their superstar, Luka Doncic, to the Los Angeles Lakers.

The Mavericks received Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a 2029 first-round pick in return, with the Utah Jazz serving as a third team to facilitate the deal.

At first glance, the trade seems puzzling. Doncic is a dynamic scorer who has led the league in scoring and earned All-NBA honors five seasons running.

Meanwhile, Davis, although an accomplished player in his own right, is almost 32 and prone to injuries.

However, according to Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison, the trade was motivated by a desire to shore up the team’s defense.

“I believe that defense wins championships,” Harrison told ESPN.

“I believe that getting an All-Defensive centre and an All-NBA player with a defensive mindset gives us a better chance.”

Davis, a four-time first-team All-NBA selection and three-time All-Defensive team pick, is indeed an elite defender. This season, he’s averaging 25.7 points and 11.9 rebounds per game. Harrison believes the 6’10 multiple All-Star is an ideal addition to the Mavericks roster.

“We’re built to win now and in the future,” Harrison concluded.

The Mavericks were swept by the Boston Celtics in the NBA Finals last June, and are clearly looking to restrategize and return to the finals this year.
