Wolverhampton Wanderers secured a crucial 2-1 victory over Southampton at St Mary’s Stadium, boosting their hopes of Premier League survival. The win lifts Wolves nine points clear of the relegation zone, while the Saints edge closer to the drop.

Southampton started the game on the front foot, dominating possession and creating early chances. However, their lack of cutting edge proved costly as Wolves took the lead in the 19th minute through Jorgen Strand Larsen, who headed home from Jean-Ricner Bellegarde’s cross after poor defending from the hosts.

Wolves doubled their advantage just two minutes into the second half. Bellegarde once again turned provider, winning possession from Aaron Ramsdale’s long ball before setting up Strand Larsen, who drilled a low shot into the bottom corner to make it 2-0.

The Saints showed some fight and pulled a goal back in the 75th minute. Tyler Dibling’s strike crashed off the post, and Paul Onuachu was on hand to convert the rebound, giving Southampton a lifeline with 15 minutes left to play.

Despite Southampton’s late push for an equalizer, Wolves held firm to secure all three points. The defeat leaves the Saints rooted to the bottom of the table and facing an almost inevitable return to the Championship.

Jorgen Strand Larsen was the standout performer, scoring both goals and stepping up in the absence of the suspended Matheus Cunha. The Norwegian striker now has eight goals and two assists in the Premier League this season.

Statistically, Southampton had the upper hand in possession with 60% and outshot Wolves 10-5. However, the visitors’ clinical finishing proved decisive, with all three of their shots on target testing Ramsdale.

With the international break approaching, Wolves will next face West Ham at Molineux on April 1, while Southampton will host Crystal Palace a day later as they continue their desperate battle to avoid relegation.
