You’re fired: Super Eagles goalkeeper loses job in Sudan 6 months after guard of honour

Super Eagles legend Nwankwo Kanu's Enyimba to start second half of the season with 'Zobia classic'

The Super Eagles goalkeeper has had his contract terminated by his Sudanese giant club.

Sudanese giants Al Merrikh SC have officially announced the termination of Nigerian goalkeeper Ojo Olorunleke’s contract, just six months into a two-year deal.

The club made the announcement via social media, stating, “Mars ends goalkeeper Ojo Olorunleke’s contract with a compromise and wishes the player success in his football career.”

This decision has taken many by surprise, particularly among Nigerian football fans and followers of the Nigerian Premier Football League, NPFL, given Olorunleke’s move to Sudan last year from Enyimba, Nigeria’s most successful football club.

He had joined Al Merrikh a year after helping Enyimba secure their historic ninth NPFL title, a record for any Nigerian club, under coach Finidi George.

Olorunleke’s departure from Enyimba was met with disappointment from the club’s loyal supporters, who appreciated his contributions over three seasons, however.

His final match for Enyimba was against Plateau United in Aba, where fans expressed their gratitude for his dedicated service.

The sudden end to his tenure at Al Merrikh raises questions about Olorunleke’s future and whether he can maintain his performance level to secure a position in the Super Eagles squad moving forward.

Ojo made his debut for the club during a friendly tournament hosted by NPFL leaders Remo Stars in Ikenne earlier last summer.

Olorunleke, who kept 11 clean sheets for Enyimba last season before ditching the NPFL for Sudan, had a rather interesting evening after gifting the Oluyole Warriors easy chances on occasion.

Twice in the first half, Olorunleke’s wayward passes were pounced upon by the Shooting Stars attackers, but they failed to make the most of the opportunities presented to them.

Having failed to impress early on, Ojo departs Sudan having made just four appearances for the giants since the celebrated move.
